(83982) Crantor, thud

(83982) Crantor is a centaur in a 1:1 mean motion resonance with Uranus discovered in April of 2002. There are prediscovery images back to January of 2002 and April-March of 2001. The orbit is between Saturn-Uranus and Uranus-Neptune.It has a perihelion of 14.1 AU and an aphelion of 25.0 AU. It has an inclination of 12.8º. It has a diameter of about 70 km. It was first suggested as a possible co-orbital of Uranus in the year 2006.


Greek mythology

Crantor was a Lapith who was killed by the centaur Demoleon in the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. Demoleon fatally wounded Crantor after he tore off Crantor's chest and left shoulder with a tree trunk that Demoleon had thrown at Theseus, who ducked out of the way.


Dealing with a sudden end
