Mani, Norse mythology for the object (307261) 2002 MS4

On June 9, 2025, the classical Kuiper belt object (307261) 2002 MS4 was officially named (307261) Mani.

 

"Máni [male character] is a personification of the Moon from Old Norse as described in the Prose Edda. Máni is the son of Mundilfari and the brother of Sól [female character], the Sun." (WGSBN Bull. 5, #11, 13)

 

In Norse mythology, the gods assigned Máni and Sól (sons of Mundilfari) the task of controlling and directing the Moon and the Sun respectively, avoiding being reached by the wolves Hati and Sköll (eclipsing agents).

 

In this mythology, the sociability of the Moon (astrological meaning) takes on a masculine component, manifesting itself in the form of initiative during social interaction. The wolves, following behind, symbolize social integration and the restructuring of the positions that each member occupies in the social hierarchy. 

 

The classical Kuiper belt object Mani represents the capacity for evolution and adaptation to rapid changes in state in the form of a burst (5:16 resonance with the planet Uranus). It also represents the ability to remain open to understanding others if their attitude and behavior are in line with our values ​​(8:13 resonance with the planet Neptune).

 

The objet Mani has the ability to remain open to facts or information that progressively help defining the quality of the situation or problem (perihelion in 8:3 resonance with the dwarf planet Eris). It also produces events or circumstances that force shortcomings related to identification processes to come to light (perihelion in 4:3 resonance with the objects Haumea-Varuna-Uni).

 

The object Mani is also related to infiltration capabilities (aphelion in 1:2 resonance with the planet Neptune), which require a certain degree of personality sophistication (aphelion in 3:4 resonance with the planet Pluto). (307261) 2002 MS4 [Mani] is a classical Kuiper object discovered in June of 2002. There are prediscovery images back to June of 1992, July and June of 1983, August of 1982, April of 1955 and April of 1954. It has a perihelion of 35.5 AU and an aphelion of 47.8 AU. It has a diameter of about 700 km.

The object 2002 MS4 [Mani] is related to closed circuits of feedback, were every action returns reinforced in each cycle of interaction, like the trade between Native Americans and European colonists, the Cold War between United States and Soviet Union, or between United States and Middle East in present times. Every action has strong consequences on the long run, and that is why is so important to act correctly from the very beginng.
